Discover the European Union in Brussels

June 18 – 24, 2017

The European Studies Center (ESC) at the University of Pittsburgh will be awarding both local and national applicants travel grants to participate in the Brussels Study Tour in June of 2017. Faculty or instructors from community colleges or minority-serving institutions can apply now for travel grants to visit Brussels, Belgium this summer to learn more about the European Union.

Instructors of any rank working at any accredited two-year community college or any Title III- or Title V-eligible four-year institution of higher education may apply.  (A downloadable Excel spreadsheet of Title III/V-eligible institutions can be found at

The five-day study tour is organized by the University of Pittsburgh’s ESC; however, ESC works in partnership with a number of universities' European area studies centers across the United States. Therefore, faculty get the opportunity to experience Brussels with peers from North Carolina, Texas, and Washington states among a few others. Additionally, this year ESC will take applications from across the nation to allow for faculty who do not have local area studies National Resource Centers the chance to participate in this tour.

During the tour, participants will engage in a variety of site visits to learn more about the European Union – how it is organized, what it does, and how non-EU institutions work with the EU. Past trips have included visits to European Union institutions (the European Parliament, the European Commission), NATO, the US Mission and think tank/consulting institutions. Last year's trip also included a school visit to one of Brussels' European Schools. All visits are arranged by ESC and will be conducted as a group.

Selected applicants will receive a grant of 2400€ (roughly $2,575.00). The grant will cover the cost of economy-class, round-trip airfare between your nearest major airport and Brussels as well as accommodations (up to six nights) while in Brussels, Belgium. Costs of travel insurance, most meals, ground transportation from the airport to your hotel, and incidentals will not be covered. Participants will have the opportunity to extend their trip at their own expense.

Note*: This grant is open to educators from any discipline. It is not limited to history or political science.

The deadline to apply is Friday, March 3, 2017.

Applicants will be notified about the results of the travel grant awards by Tuesday, April 4, 2017.
